About Me

Observing first-hand the colours, patterns and textures of the land and recording these as expressive paintings that have a sense of place is the starting point for all my energetic embroideries.

The first layers of these textile works are the result of a selection process of an artist's eye, choosing fabrics that start to tell a story; often a snippet of a sari from a friend or the sleeve of a velvet shirt from my sister. The fun begins here with my trusted sewing machine and free-motion embroidery. I use loose expressive marks to build up layers that take the viewer on a journey over the surface of the work. The incidental distortions of the fabrics are all part of the resulting rich textures. Combining velvets and shot-silks with matt and lustrous threads are my tools to develop dynamic layers and balance. My textile design background and my love of the landscape in Cornwall and Scotland all connect in creating these unique embroidered works.

I studied Fashion and Textiles at Liverpool, graduating with a BA(Hons) before becoming a knitwear designer. Following on from this, I worked in Interior Design and soft furnishings where I developed my love of fabrics and colour. With young children at home, I took a series of evening classes where I discovered free machine embroidery. I loved how you could quickly build up colour and texture, embedding stitch into layers of rich, textural fabrics. This quickly became my tool of choice to express my creativity.
